Australian football has been played in Sweden since 1993, after the Helsingborg Saints were formed to play in the Danish Australian Football League.
The national team, The Elks debuted in 1997 against the Danish Vikings and have since gone on to play in the EU Cup (defeating Germany in the 2007 Grand Final), the Tri-Nations Cup and two International Cups.
The game is currently played in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Karlstad, Falun, Norrtälje, Uppsala and Scania.
A national governing body was formed in 2007 under the name Svenska Australiensiska Fotbollsförbundet or AFL Sweden.

Brett Hutchins

"The AFL is quite wisely trying to break international markets, but they're a very different organization to things like the IPL and the NBA. I mean, basketball and soccer have a natural international following. They have deep roots within communities and suburbs and cities in various parts of the world. So it's not this question that you have to sell a strange game to a local population and show them why it's special. "
